I had told Derek no.
He had proceeded anyway.

“Yes.”

“You always think you’re right because you write things down.”
I almost smiled.
“No, Derek. I write things down because people like you later pretend I misunderstood.”
He had no answer for that.
So he reached for the oldest tool in the family shed.
“We’re family.”
I looked out the window at the creek flashing between trees.

He hung up.
That evening, Patricia called.
I had expected it.

“What have you done to my son?”

“He said you never gave him a real chance.”
“I gave him an answer. He didn’t want a chance. He wanted permission after the fact.”
“He was trying to help you.”
I closed my eyes.

“Patricia,” I said, “when I told you in January that Derek was pushing this, why didn’t you tell him to stop?”
Silence.
I waited.
Outside, a branch scraped lightly against the kitchen window.

“That’s not fair.”

“He proposed it.”
“He was just starting high because people negotiate.”

She said nothing.
So I asked the question I had been carrying since the first phone call.

Silence again.

Finally, she said, “You’ve changed.”
I looked around my kitchen. The coffee mug near my hand. The grocery receipt tucked under the magnet shaped like North Carolina. The fading evening light on the floorboards.
“Yes,” I said. “I bought a door that locks.”
She hung up.

“Authorization would be forthcoming,” he repeated.

The older woman put a hand to her chest.

Derek laughed, but it cracked at the edges.

The father’s face changed.
“What does that mean?”

I held up the folder.
Derek’s smile disappeared.

“No.”
The mother stepped closer to her husband.
“You told us your uncle was on board,” she said to Derek.
Derek took off his sunglasses.
“He is. There’s a family dispute.”
“No,” I said. “There is a property owner and a person violating a court order.”
That was when the sheriff’s vehicle rolled into the driveway.

Deputy Harris stepped out.
Derek turned pale so quickly that I almost felt sorry for him.

The father turned to Derek.

Derek said nothing.

“You ought to be ashamed of yourself,” she said.
That did what the court order had not.
Derek flinched.

I walked down the porch steps.

The mother looked tired.

The father thanked me.

“He listed my private home as a rental without permission. Guests showed up. A court order stopped him.”
She paused and said, “Well, that’s more than Patricia mentioned.”
“I imagine it is.”

I stopped caring quicker than I expected.

“That tracks.”

I believed her.

She asked how the house was.
I told her about the porch railing, the rhododendrons, Roy’s beagle, the creek running high.
She listened.
For once, she did not ask whether I really needed all that space.

Before we hung up, she said, “Maybe I could come visit sometime.”
