“Nora,” he said.

He blinked.
“What?”
“I called,” I repeated. “Tuesday night. Then Thursday. Then Sunday.”
His expression shifted, not into relief but confusion. “I didn’t get any calls.”
“You didn’t get them on your work phone,” I said. “I called the other one.”
The room changed.

For a long moment, all I could hear was the hum of the refrigerator from the kitchen and a siren somewhere far downtown.

“Oh my God,” he said.

“Julian likes the word complicated,” she said. “It makes selfishness sound smarter.”
I was not prepared for the first clean hit of agreement between us. It knocked something off balance.
“How long?” I asked.
She folded the rag once, twice.
“How long has he been lying to me? Since the beginning?”
Her eyes did not leave my face.
“Yes.”

“He knew before the wedding?”

“How?”

Asked me to take care of it.”
The words were so calmly spoken I almost missed their violence.
“You mean end the pregnancy.”
“Yes.”
“And you said no.”

“I’m stubborn,” she said. “And I knew that much about myself before I knew anything else.”

“So he married me.”

“No,” she said, studying me. “I can see that now.”
There was a child’s voice overhead then, singing to herself as she moved around upstairs.
Clare’s whole body changed.
“Lucy’s home,” she said quickly, looking toward the ceiling. “You need to go.”
I stood at once.
“Does she know?”
“Only what children piece together when adults think they’re invisible.”
The little footsteps came closer.
A floorboard creaked above us.
“Please,” Clare said, and for the first time her control slipped. “I don’t want her dragged into this in the doorway of my studio.”
That plea was not about Julian or me. It was about the child.
So I nodded and left.
By the time I reached the sidewalk, Lucy was already halfway down the stairs inside, asking, “Mommy, who was that lady?”
I did not hear Clare’s answer.
On the flight back to New York, I kept seeing the drawing on the wall.

“Wounded pride,” Peter said. “That’s what we’re calling a double life now?”
“This is between husband and wife.”
“No,” I said. “It’s between husband, wife, mistress, child, and every person who helped him lie.”
Her eyes came back to mine, glacial and bright.
“You are upset,” she said, as if diagnosing weather. “Naturally. But marriages of quality survive far worse than this. Real marriages are not built on romantic fantasy. Her face filled the screen first, backlit by afternoon light in the studio. There was clay on her cheek. Before I could ask anything, she turned the phone.
Lucy popped into view with a grin missing one front tooth.
“Hi, Miss Nora!”
“Hi, sweetheart.”
“I have something to ask you.” She leaned very close to the camera as if it were a confidential matter. “Mom says maybe this summer we can come to New York for one day and see Central Park and maybe the boats, and I said I know somebody there, and Mom said not like that, but I do, so if we come, will you come with us?”
Behind her, Clare looked both amused and faintly apologetic.
It was not a dramatic invitation. Not a sentimental one either.
Just a child extending the logic of her own heart.
“Yes,” I said. “I’d love to.”
Lucy squealed, disappeared out of frame, then came back holding up a new drawing.

When the call ended, I stood for a while in my kitchen with the phone still in my hand.
Then I took the crooked red heart Lucy had given me out of the drawer where I kept it and stuck it to my refrigerator with a blue magnet.

Outside, Brooklyn was full of the sounds of ordinary life—someone wheeling groceries upstairs, a dog barking at nothing, a delivery truck idling too long at the curb. I opened the window and let the spring air in. Then I pulled a skillet from the cabinet, set butter on the counter, and started making myself dinner.
For the first time in a long time, I was hungry.
Not for justice. Not for revenge. Not for explanations.
Just for my own life, plain and hot and finally mine.
