Ray leaned forward.

Patricia turned to him.

Brent stared at her.

Ray’s mouth tightened.
“Now hold on. This sounds like an old man being manipulated by an attorney.”
Patricia’s expression did not change.
“Mr. Callaway contacted me independently. He provided full documentation. He was advised of every consequence, including the loss of development value. He signed voluntarily before a notary. If you are suggesting incapacity or coercion, I would be very careful about making that claim without evidence.”
Ray sat back.
Sandra had gone pale in the doorway, one hand gripping her handbag strap.
Brent turned to me.
“You did this behind our backs?”
I let that sit for a moment.

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

Sandra lowered her eyes.
Ray shifted in his chair.
Brent said nothing.
“You told me the conversation would happen whether I was in the room or not,” I continued. “So I made sure I was in every room that mattered before you arrived.”
His face flushed dark.
“This is personal,” he said.
“It became personal when you mistook my restraint for permission.”
No one moved.
Outside, a crow called once from the fence line.
Patricia closed her portfolio, but she remained standing.
“There is one more provision relevant to today,” she said.
Brent looked at her sharply.
“As of the trust’s effective date, any person residing on the property for more than seventy-two hours must comply with the resident labor requirements of the charter. Twenty-five hours per week of documented agricultural work, approved by the resident trustee and subject to board review.”
Sandra blinked.
“Excuse me?”
Patricia continued evenly.
“Guests may visit short term. Residents work. Noncompliance may result in notice to vacate.”
Ray gave a humorless laugh.
“That’s ridiculous. We’re family.”
“You are guests,” Patricia said. “Family is a personal relationship. Residency is governed by the trust.”
Brent looked at me with open contempt then.
“You built a trap.”
“No,” I said. “I built a fence. You only call it a trap because you were already on the wrong side of it.”
That was the moment the room finally understood.
Not just Brent.

The farm was not available.

“Clare,” he said. “Pack your things.”
She looked at him.

“I was trying to help us.”
“No,” she said again, and this time her voice was steadier. “You were trying to win.”
He looked around the room, searching for support.

“For her?”

I looked out over the farm.

Clare reached over and took my hand.
